Which Memory Keeping Method is Best For Me?

Can't decide the best way to get those pictures off your phone to be able to better relive the memories? Look no further. See my pro & con list for a few of the popular options.

Memory keeping or scrapbooking can seem like a very daunting task to anyone. However, I think we can all agree that getting pictures off our phones and into something everyone can enjoy is never a bad idea. Over the years, I’ve used various methods so I thought I’d share my knowledge with you to help you determine which memory keeping method is best for you! I’ll summarize and go over what I think are the pros and cons of each method/company.

Mixbook:

Knowing what scrapbook site you should use is easy with this post that compares the pros and cons of each!

Cost: $$

Time: varies

Website: Custom Photo Books at Mixbook

Favorite Things:

  • Highly customizable
  • Free stickers and paper to use
  • Photo layouts with and without backgrounds
  • Plenty of room for text
  • One of the 1st online scrapbook companies

Could Be Better:

  • Website takes a little bit to figure out at first
  • Hard to make a very quick, empty album (like the guest book)

I have used Mixbook for everything from albums about trips to even the guest books at our wedding and I have very little complaints. Once you have their website figured out, you can make your scrapbook look any way you want. I even made one for my study abroad in Jerusalem that I wanted to look like a journal with a few photos scattered around.

I was able to add my own background of lined paper and then use the included “stickers” to mark each day and I loved the way it turned out! But, in being honest it took literally forever! Custom looks great but the more custom you make something the longer it will take.

(You can even use Mixbook to make your Christmas cards here: photo cards and they always have sales so make your book or cards and then wait a few days to order)

Project Life:

Cost: $$$

Time: Moderate

Website: https://beckyhiggins.com/project-life/

I used Project Life for my wedding scrapbook and there are several things that I love about it.

Favorite Things:

  • Uses actual prints of photos
  • Several theme decks to choose from
  • More structured than custom

Could Be Better:

  • Hard to print photos for the small slots
  • Prints can slide out of slots while flipping through
  • Limited arranging of photos based on pocket sleeves chosen

Project life has come a long way and has a ton of options. The original idea behind it was making memory keeping an easy daily activity by filling out a few of the card decks and printing out the photos. I like the idea, but I think it is harder to put into practice and gets expensive fast.

Chatbooks:

If you haven’t seen their commercial already you need to watch it here: YouTube

Their goal is to make memory keeping easy so you can get your photos onto paper. As they say “hold what matters”

Cost: $

Time: Quick

Website: https://chatbooks.com

Favorite Things:

  • Simple
  • Can make them automatic (they will automatically make you a book and send it to you every 50 photos you post!!)
  • Small but high quality
  • Uses an app to create
  • Great for kids

Could Be Better:

  • One photo per page
  • Minimal text

I think chatbooks did a great job making photo books more accessible to everyone without having to commit much time to create them. It is great for kids to look at all your pictures without just swiping through your phone so I think I’ll use them more often once I have kids. This is a chatbook I made for my husband for his birthday. It was a custom book option where I added all the photos from his 26th year including a short caption (that is uploaded automatically if you choose instagram photos) and the location the photo was taken. It was a cute, quick and only $12 gift!

Enhanced Journal:

Cost: $

Time: Minimal if you don’t get behind

This has become my preferred daily method as of late for daily/non-trip memory keeping. Grab a journal from amazon and write down your daily adventures except leave room for photos. Use a 4×6 card to know how much space to leave and then once a month print out your photos and add them into the blank spaces. I typically print my photos at Costco and you can even print square pictures!

Shutterfly:

Now this company is pretty similar with Mixbook except their expertise is in prints instead of books. When I was deciding which to use for my guest books, it was evident that Shutterfly wasn’t as quick and user friendly even though print quality is very similar I’ve found that they are a little more expensive except when they are having a sale. The book above was one I made for my in-laws thanking them for taking us to Hawaii. It turned out great!

Cost: $$$

Time: Long

Website: www.shutterfly.com

Favorite Things:

  • Highly customizable
  • Plenty of layouts to choose from
  • High quality

Could Be Better:

  • Cost for different paper, stickers and even fonts
  • Download software to make the scrapbook
  • Behind the times-late to the digital scrapbook game

Summary:

If you are looking for a digital scrapbook for a trip or event I would recommend Mixbook. I like their software and their choices. They make it as easy or as custom as you want. If you just want a printed book of your photos so they are off your phone or so you can give them to your kids Chatbooks is the way to go. Simple and can be automatic and very affordable. Hope this helped!
